5-Day Itinerary for Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park

If you’re planning a romantic escape to coastal Maine, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are the perfect mix of rugged beauty and refined comfort. From ocean-view breakfasts to watching people rock climb on the cliffs, here’s how to spend five unforgettable days soaking in the best of the island. Curated for couples who love a little local insider info with their adventure.

Day 1: Arrival & Seaside Indulgence

Where to Stay:
Check into The West Street Hotel, Harborside Hotel or Bar Harbor Inn,  all offer oceanfront rooms, private balconies, and elegant dining just steps from the water.

Afternoon:
Stroll along the Shore Path, a scenic 1.5 mile oceanfront walk lined with wildflowers and grand historic homes. It’s an easy way to stretch your legs after travel and get your first glimpse of Frenchman Bay.

Evening:
Reserve a table at Havana, one of Bar Harbor’s most upscale restaurants serving Cuban-inspired fine dining with Maine flair. End the night with cocktails on the deck at The Terrace Grille, located right at Bar Harbor Inn, watching the harbor lights twinkle on the water.

Day 2: Sunrise on Cadillac Mountain & Spa Relaxation

Morning:
Rise early and drive to Cadillac Mountain for sunrise. You do need a reservation for this! Cadillac Mountain sees the first rays of sunlight to touch the U.S. from late fall to early spring. Bring cozy blankets and coffee.

Mid-Morning:

Head downtown afterwards for breakfast from The Stadium or Sunrise Cafe. The stadium sells Pop-overs starting at 9am everyday, and they sell out quick!

Afternoon:
Explore Downtown Bar Harbor and browse boutique shops, art galleries, and the Abbe Museum for a look at Maine’s Wabanaki heritage.

Evening:
Dine at The Reading Room for a romantic meal with sweeping harbor views. Their lobster bisque and local seafood dishes are exceptional.

Day 3: Hiking & Coastal Adventures

Morning:

Start by renting an AcadiaGEM and head into Acadia for a half-day hike.

Two favorite hikes for couples:

Jordan Pond Path – a peaceful 3.5-mile loop with views of the Bubbles and pristine reflections in the pond.

  • Beehive Trail – for adventurous couples seeking a thrilling, short climb with panoramic ocean views.

Lunch:
Enjoy lunch at Jordan Pond House, famous for its tea and popovers overlooking the water.

Afternoon:
Drive the Park Loop Road, stopping at Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliffs. Each offers postcard-perfect photo opportunities.

Evening:
Return to town for dinner at Testas, a cozy, upscale spot with a locally inspired menu and romantic courtyard dining.

Day 4: Island Exploration & Sunset Cruise

Morning:
Venture beyond Bar Harbor, take a scenic drive to Northeast Harbor and Somes Sound, where luxury meets tranquility. Stop at Asticou Azalea Garden for a quiet morning walk.

Lunch:
Enjoy a light lunch at The Nor’Easter, tucked near the harbor with beautiful views.

Book a private schooner or Lulu’s lobster boat cruise for the afternoon. The Margaret Todd Schooner is a favorite for sunset sails. Be sure to bring your own blankets and wine!

Evening:
After your cruise, dine at Stewman’s Lobster Pound or Paddy’s for an upscale take on traditional Maine seafood.

Day 5: Leisure & Farewell to the Coast

Morning:
Head to the quiet side of the island and have breakfast at Clark Point Cafe, known for its stunning play on food art and amazing tastes!

Late Morning:

Spend your final hours exploring Acadia’s carriage roads by horse-drawn carriage or rent e-bikes to cruise through the forest. Stop by Bubble Pond Bridge or Day Mountain for stunning parting views.

Lunch:
Grab a relaxed farewell meal at Side Street Café, a local favorite known for its lobster rolls and cocktails.

Afternoon:
Before you head out, take one last stroll along the Bar Island Land Bridge (accessible during low tide). It is a symbolic way to say goodbye to Mount Desert Island until next time. Be sure to look up the  Bar Harbor Tide Chart
