Behind The Scenes: What It’s Like to Photograph an Elopement in Acadia in 2025
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to elope in Acadia National Park? Are you curious about what the experience in front of and behind the lens is like? Do you want to peak at some behind the scenes of it all? You’re in the right place!
I am overjoyed to share what a day in my life is like as a wedding and elopement photographer in Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor, Maine.
When couples dream about eloping in Acadia National Park, they often picture the breathtaking views, crashing waves, and quiet intimacy of promising forever surrounded by rugged Maine beauty. What they don’t always see is what goes on behind the scenes to make that magic happen.
As an Acadia elopement photographer, I get to witness not just the “I do’s” but the quiet moments of preparation, the challenges of weather, and the laughter that comes when plans shift unexpectedly. Here’s a little peek into what it’s really like behind the scenes of an Acadia National Park elopement.
Early Morning Start
Most couples choose sunrise or sunset for their elopement ceremony in Acadia. Sunrise especially holds a special kind of magic, and it means we’re starting the day in the dark.
At 3:30 or 4:00 AM, I’m usually pulling into the park while the stars are still shining. My gear is prepped the night before: fully charged batteries, backup cameras, and a carefully chosen set of lenses. I always bring a headlamp, plenty of water, and layers because mornings on the Maine coast can be chilly even in the summer.
Meanwhile, the couple is either waking up in their cozy Bar Harbor Airbnb or maybe camping nearby, getting ready with sleepy excitement. Sometimes they’re helping each other zip up gowns and straighten ties, other times they’re FaceTiming family who couldn’t make the trip.
Hiking to the Ceremony Spot
Many of Acadia’s best elopement locations require a little hike. Whether it’s the iconic Cadillac Mountain, the cliffs of Otter Point, or a quiet trail along Jordan Pond, reaching the ceremony site is part of the adventure.
I often hike ahead to scout lighting and angles, making sure I can capture that first look at the exact right spot. Along the way, we stop for breaks, soak in the views, and sometimes adjust outfits (yes, hiking boots under a wedding dress are totally normal here).
Behind the scenes, I’m balancing logistics, keeping track of the time so we’re in place for the golden light, carrying a little emergency kit with bobby pins, tissues, and safety pins, and encouraging the couple to breathe, laugh, and just enjoy the journey.
The Ceremony
Once we reach the spot, things slow down. This is where the couple’s vision really comes alive. Some bring handwritten vows folded in their pockets; others have a friend officiate, or sometimes it’s just the two of them sharing words privately as I photograph from a respectful distance.
Behind the scenes, I’m making tiny adjustments constantly, shifting slightly to avoid a tree branch in the frame, keeping an eye on tourists in the background, and watching the light change minute by minute. Acadia’s weather can be unpredictable, so I’m also ready to pivot if fog rolls in or a drizzle starts. (Pro tip: fog often makes photos even dreamier.)
The Real Moments
After the vows, we spend time exploring. This is often the couple’s favorite part, climbing on the rocks, running through the spruce forests, or just sitting quietly together on a cliff overlooking the ocean.
Behind the scenes, I’m capturing both the big sweeping landscapes and the tiny details: the way her hair blows in the wind, how his hand rests protectively on her back, the laughter that bubbles out when a seagull squawks loudly during their kiss. These candid, unplanned moments are what make each elopement unique.
The Challenges No One Sees
What couples don’t always realize is how much flexibility goes into photographing an Acadia elopement. The tide schedule matters if you want to be on the rocky shore. The park rules mean we’re careful to stay within permitted areas. And the weather, well, Maine weather is its own character in the story.
I’ve had mornings where we waited out heavy fog, afternoons where the wind whipped veils around like kites, and evenings where rain forced us to huddle under trees until it passed. Every time, though, it’s worth it. Those challenges become part of the story, and often they lead to even more beautiful and authentic images.
Wrapping Up the Day
By the time we’re done, the couple is usually glowing, from both the joy of the day and the adventure of climbing, hiking, and laughing their way through Acadia. Sometimes we end the session with a picnic by the water or a celebratory toast at a Bar Harbor restaurant.
Behind the scenes, I’m already backing up their images onto multiple hard drives (photographer paranoia is real), editing a few sneak peeks so they can share with family, and reliving the day in my mind.
Why Behind the Scenes Matters
When couples look at my portfolio, they see the polished final image, the sweeping cliffs, the tender kisses, the golden glow of the sun. But behind every single photograph is a story of planning, flexibility, and trust.
Eloping in Acadia National Park isn’t just about the ceremony itself. It’s about the whole experience: waking up in the dark, hiking with your partner, embracing the wind and weather, and celebrating love in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
And for me? It’s about being there for every behind-the-scenes moment so I can capture the memories exactly as they felt.
